What exactly are you doing there?

This might be a question a boss would ask the employee that is playing Online Poker during working hours. Would you agree that your boss has a right to know if you are working for the money you are paid, or rather talking to your friend on the phone and picking your nose? I suppose you would agree. After work, you go home and put on your pink shirt, dancing to 70’s pop music. Would you want your boss to know? I suppose you don’t. Because it’s not his right.

Yesterday it became known that the bosses of a big German supermarket chain had taken the term “supervision” a little too seriously. Detectives were hired to install cameras in the locker room and to investigate the likes and dislikes of the employees. Was there anything to hide? Some dirty socks or a sweaty t-shirt? The cameras caught it. Protocols were written about the observations made, revealing not-so-witty remarks about traits of character, or about how often Mr. A. and Mr. B go to the washrooms during work. And it is not only that. On the top of it all is the case of a female employee who was suspected of having pretended to be insolvent. There must be a limit for big brother, don’t you think? Otherwise, the 1984 scenario will soon be reality and we will be forced to do morning exercises in front of the face on the screen…
