Looking for colors

While webdesigning, an important aspect of it is, at least me thinks it is, choosing the right colors.
Right now I am working on a theme designed with a photo I took with my camera. It is the first time ever that I do so and this time I decided to be more brave when it comes to choosing kind of a color scheme. The previous themes I designed were more or less “one-colored” (nice word creation, eh?) which means that I did use a narrow range of colors for the design in order not to spoil the layout.
A few days ago I took this new photo for my work, and tried to get some colors out of it by using the color picker of my graphics programme, and came to see that the two colors (a fresh green and a light pink) fit together very nicely. Additionally, I am using online color schemers to gain inspiration and new combinations.
How do you choose the colors for your layouts?

Hi Daniela!! I just love your blog and am so glad I came accross it! I am a writer/designer too and enjoy reading all that you write. I do hope you drop by my blog sometime. Hope to see you at my space soon! ciao!
Hmm, I have no fixed way of selecting colours. I guess I tend to experiment with several different colour schemes to see which goes together best, and select that one for my next design. :P
I usually choose my colours by the textures/images i use.
It’s easier that way and everything usually turns out nicely for me:)
good luck on the theme you’re trying to do:D
Hey hun! it was just an issue with my css…but i fixed it thanks tho! I looked at your mini gallery i love your designs.
I definitely know what you mean, I think the color scheme is one of the most challenging parts of coding the layout. Especially if your going for a specific theme like I usually do. I don’t have any problem with simplicity sometimes, to me I think it depends on the layout. If you have like this extravagant layout you don’t want this boring one-colored(stealing ya word) layout you want a nice mix or the opposite it might be so busy ya want to tone it down. Very confusing thing
Fresh green and pink definately look great together! I luv that combo. Well to pick the colors.. I just try to match it nicely with the pictures I’m using
:woohoo:
With my old site, I usually did nature-themed layouts, and my color schemes reflected nature elements, such as the ocean and sand, or a sunset by the river. Your right, though. Color schemes are just as important as the layout itself.
maybe this can help? http://wellstyled.com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html
Hey. Thanks for visiting
Diwali’s a festival we Indians celebrate with loads of sweets, some mad fireworks and other whack things. hehe
I dunno too much about colours because I stopped designing a few years ago. Hehe. Took up too much time, so it’s pre-mades for me now
But i guess as long as they complement each other and goes with the picture and isn’t too jarring or too dull its cool. I’m quite interested in your new one. WHat’s the picture like?
I like bright colours accompanied by grey monochromatic tones. So I find it relatively easy to do. I always just use CSS as well; it’s rare that I use images. I find layouts quite a problem because of that, I struggle with it.
But looking at your current theme I’d say you have no troubles. It looks amazing and is certainly more than I could achieve!
I’m almost notorious for my use of monotone layout schemes, so I’m probably not the best person to ask about how I select colour schemes. :P I do like this online colour schemer though…it helps.
Usually, since I’m not good at picking colors, I change the colors of the images I’m using. Perhaps, making it a bit greyscale and adusting the color balance. Then I’ll stick with whichever color shows up most. It works for me~
As for the layout you’re working on now; I’ll be waiting to see it up!
hey there daniella.
im actually not good in picking colors. usually, the color i use for my webbie layouts is pink, my favorite colors. so if i run out of ideas, i do web designing the other way: thinking of a design that would look good on pink, not look for a color that would fit a design.

I’m aweful with choosing colours, I always end up making an almost one colour layout, sometimes I manage to branch out, but the one colour layouts just seem to happen. The way I choose colours for layouts is going through the image with the eye drop option onf PSP and pick colours and add them and mess around till I fnd something that works.
Ooo. I love your colour scheme. I’m so horrible at choosing colours, it’s not even funny. I choose colours for my layouts by thinking of what my friend’s wear. It’s really weird, but most of my friends have some colour sense (except me) so most of their colours kind of go together.
I never really thought about it until now, but most of my layout colours are determined as such: 3 complimentary, 1-2 contrasting.
It is true that color schemes are pretty important when choosing them for your designs. Sometimes I think I’m bad at it and sometimes I think I did well. I usually choose colors for the main design itself for text and link colors, but sometimes I venture out a little to see if any other colors would look good thrown in there.
By looking around here, I think you’re pretty good at choosing your colors. =)
