Living by numbers

Some things in life really make me go crazy…here are the stats:

Hours of sleep per night: 3-5
Days to exams: 15
Food: Crap, like french fries and all that stuff
Design templates made in vain due to the stupidity of some people: 1

AND, this design template will go to my homepage to be downloaded by you. Really it is annoying if you spend half your night on a piece of work and then they tell you that it was in vain. In fact, I was very angry, but I am not, anymore.

Currently I am still working on the new layout for Islaperdida, which will be the tenth one *hooray* And I recently went to the W3-Homepage to validate my stylesheet and after that corrected the errors, so now that Islaperdida has valid CSS.
There are a lot of people on the web who are concerned about whether their page is userfriendly or not, and I have seen some really beautiful examples of that. In my opinion, some aspects which increase the usability of the page are:

1. Design:

  • Choosing a moderate color combination which does not affect the view.
  • The colors of the design and the font-color must provide a considerable contrast, so that texts can be read without major efforts.
  • Be sure that the loading time of your layout does not take too long. Not everybody has the time to wait and hour for the site to load.

2. Structure:

  • Be sure that the navigation is visible, and that the issues of the navigation are clear to the user (Whats the use of writing “insane psycho” instead of “about me”
  • The place for the content has to be wide enough. There is no use of getting too much content into too small space.

It also seems appropriate to check a site in various browsers (IE, Mozilla, Firefox) to see wether there are difficulties or major differences.

I know it has been written much about usability so far and there is no use in doing it again, but my concern is to pick up the facts that strike me most when surfing the web and to give you an idea what is important to me regarding webdesign.

If you want to discuss this issue, please feel free to do so…
